Nichrome wire - a widely used high-precision alloy of chromium and nickel with high electrical resistance. Base metal which is part of these alloys is nickel (Ni). Its share in the nichrome is 55-78%. In second place is chromium (Cr) - 15-23%. Also nichrome Cr20Ni80 and Cr15Ni60 contain sulfur (S), manganese (Mn), titanium (Ti), carbon (C), aluminum (Al), phosphorus (P), silicon (Si), Iron (Fe).
Chromium and nickel determine the properties of nichrome. Nickel is capable of dissolving large amounts of other metals. At the same time it retains good ductility. Also this metal has good corrosion resistance in liquid and gaseous media and, as noted above, has good flexibility and heat resistance. Chromium, in its turn, has high heat resistance, hardness, and is also resistant to corrosion.
Thus, the nichrome is heat resistant, high temperature strong, flexible, and has a high resistance to corrosion. Such property as heat resistance determines the maximum operating temperature of nichrome. For nichrome Cr20Ni80 it's up to 1200° C (depending on the diameter of the wire), for nichrome Cr15Ni60 - up to 1125° C (depending on the diameter of the wire) (GOST (State Standard) 12766.1-90). Influence of nickel in the alloy can be seen on the following property - the more nickel nichrome contains, the greater is the maximum operating temperature of nichrome.
Another feature worthy of note is its plasticity. It has to do with technological properties, which show what types of treatment (turning, welding, stamping, drawing, etc.) this material may be subjected. Nichrome has a high ductility which makes it possible to obtain such products as wire nichrome, nichrome ribbon, including a thin wire. Nichrome wire is obtained by forming, namely drawing.
The next most important physical properties of nichrome are small temperature coefficient of electrical resistance and high electrical resistivity. These properties combined with high heat resistance have identified the use of nichrome wire and nichrome ribbon in the manufacture of high-temperature heating elements.
Application (Use):
Cr20Ni80 Nichrome is used in electric heaters in furnaces in all industries, home appliances and heating devices. It's widely used in high-temperature electric furnaces, burning and drying ovens, various heating electrical devices. Nichrome is used as heating and the resisting element. It has high heat resistance, ductility and dimensional stability. Nichrome is also used as a heat-resistant (refractory) alloy and chemically resistant alloy in certain aggressive environments.
